CBD for pets FAQs

General Information

Full spectrum hemp CBD can be very beneficial in helping to ease anxiety, promoting healthy joints and digestion, maintaining the body’s normal inflammatory response, addressing discomfort, loss of appetite and more.

According to the feedback we receive from pet parents, benefits are evident between five minutes and one hour, averaging around twenty minutes. Every pet is different. We recommend that you observe your pet’s response. If there isn’t a noticeable change within the hour, administer more.

Generally, results last 4 – 8 hours. Some pets do well on one administration per day, while others require two to three.

Benefits are usually observed in anywhere from five minutes to one hour. For some pets with more severe issues, it may take a week or two of two servings per day to saturate the system and provide desired results.

Daily administration of our products can be very beneficial for pets. Treatibles are free of heavy metals, pesticides and biocontaminants.

Yes, Treatibles products are ideal for extended use and can be especially beneficial for pets suffering from joint discomfort, anxiety, and other maladies.

We generally recommend beginning with 1 mg for every 10 lbs of body weight and increasing as needed up to 10 mg for every 10 lbs of body weight. We base our recommendations on what veterinary experts recommend, which is .25 mg/kg – 2 mg/kg. Because customers in the U.S. are more familiar with pounds than kilograms, we translate this information to be stated in pounds. That said, .25mg/kg is comparable to .25 mg/2.2 lb. We encourage pet parents to increase as needed. Many animals with high anxiety or joint discomfort often require more than 1 mg per every 10 lbs. We have had customers report the need to increase the serving size to 2 mg/kg, which is the same as 2 mg/2.2 lb.

We generally recommend beginning with 1 mg of full spectrum hemp CBD for every 10 lbs of body weight and increasing as needed up to 10 mg for every 10 lbs of body weight. For more guidance, click here.

We have found that the benefits from Treatibles last anywhere from 4 – 8 hours. Some pets do well with only one administration per day, some require two or three.

Based on millions of administrations and data, hemp poses no undue risk to the animal.

Our full spectrum hemp CBD oil, MCT coconut oil and peppermint oil are all organic.

Our suppliers have assured us that all ingredients in Treatibles products are GMO-free.

It can depend on the size of your pet, if you have a multiple pet household and even on your pet’s preference. Generally speaking, our 750 mg dropper bottle oil is an excellent value. The high potency mean fewer drops are needed per serving. For example, an 80 lb dog offered the 750 mg oil would start with a suggested serving size of 8 drops. Based on two servings per day, the total would be 16 drops per day. At this rate, the bottle would last approximately 56 days. At .85 mg of full spectrum hemp oil per drop, this works out to be approximately .16 cents per mg. The 4 mg hard chews are a close second in terms of cost, at approximately .18 cents per mg of full spectrum hemp CBD oil.

Our new Extra Strength line of products can also provide a great value.

All Treatibles products (with the exception of our CBD-Free line) contain  Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD and are equally beneficial. Customers do report that offering the straight oil (from a dropper bottle) provides the fastest results.

Treatibles was established in 2013. We blazed the trail as the first company to offer full spectrum hemp CBD oil products for pets.

Yes. In addition to our veterinary advisor, Dr. Lynn Bahr, we consult with a select group of veterinarians who are experts in the area of cannabinoids for pets. Our products can be found in veterinary practices across the nation.
Trainers, behaviorists, animal communicators, and groomers from all around the USA offer and recommend Treatibles to their clients.
Yes. We regularly work with may rescue organizations across the USA. In addition to special pricing and product donations, we also volunteer our time locally here in California. Please visit our Rescue page for more information.
Even the healthiest pets need support every now and then (think stressful situations like Fourth of July fireworks, trips to the vet, introducing new pets to the home, etc.).

Yes. Treatibles are appropriate for cats, dogs and horses of all ages.

Unopened packages, dropper bottles, ready packs and capsules are child resistant. To be safe, keep all Treatibles products out of the reach of children and pets.

When Treatibles submits products for testing, there is a system. First, the raw full spectrum hemp oil is submitted. Most recent lab test results can be found on the Lab Results page. We then have each batch of each of our chews tested.

During the manufacturing process of our chews, the raw oil is incorporated into the batter and the chews are extruded. In testing an individual chew, the cannabinoid content of the minor cannabinoids is non-detectable on the COA due to low potency per piece. For example, there is 276 mg of CBD per gram of oil. Minor cannabinoids range from 11 – 13 mg per gram of oil. With the large hard chews, for example, containing 4 mg of CBD, the other minor cannabinoids are low and result as non-detectable on the COA.

Delta 8 THC is not unlike Delta 9 THC. Both can affect your pet negatively. It has the opposite affect of CBD. Instead of calm, balance, and ease, it can give them anxiety, dizziness, digestive accidents, and make them lethargic. If your pet accidently ingests Delta 8 or Delta 9 THC, CBD can help.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a known THC inhibitor. It works by blocking THC from binding with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. This can minimize the psychoactive properties of THC. Medical research shows definite evidence of THC metabolizing at a different rate when cannabidiol was administered.

Because there is limited research in this area, there are no set guidelines for the exact amount of CBD to neutralize psychoactive THC. Based upon the calculation of 1.5 mg per pound for a 150-pound human, a 50-pound dog may require approximately 34 mg. Treatibles 750 mg CBD oil dropper bottle provides 25 mg per dropperful. In addition, we do offer a 25 mg CBD Capsule. Offering more based on each individual animal’s need can be beneficial.

Science

Treatibles third party tests our raw oil and each batch of every product to ensure consistent cannabinoid potency and to rule out heavy metals and biocontaminants. Our testing method identifies the full spectrum of cannabinoids present in each product and the exact milligram count of the beneficial cannabinoids in each serving. Lab results are available on the Lab Results page.

All Treatibles products contain our proprietary organic full spectrum hemp CBD oil, not a CBD isolate. Because only a few grams of Treatibles chews (hard and soft) can be lab tested at a time, supporting cannabinoids and terpenes often appear as ND (non-detectable) in the lab test results. A more accurate profile of the cannabinoid and terpene levels in our products can be found in the test results from our oil.

Cannabinoids are a group of naturally occurring chemical compounds present in both animals and the plant genus cannabis, which includes both hemp and cannabis. The prefix phyto means plant. Phytocannabinoids are cannabinoids derived from plants.

The endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a biochemical communication system that regulates the peripheral and central nervous system (including the brain), immunological system, organs, and vital physiological functions. It promotes homeostasis, ensuring the major systems of the body work synergistically. When there is a deficiency of endocannabinoid production, the ECS’s multiple receptors utilize the addition of phytocannabinoids to help create calm, ease, and balance and provide support for relaxing, repairing or restoring. The naturally occurring compounds in hemp are important for the overall health of dogs, cats, humans, horses and all animals.

Dogs are especially responsive to these compounds as they have the highest concentration of cannabinoid receptors in their brains and bodies (even in their hair follicles!) compared to other animals, including humans.

All animals except for insects have an endocannabinoid system.

The endocannabinoid system was first discovered in the 1960s by Israeli scientist, Rafael Mechoulam.

There is some research indicating that at very high doses, cannabidiol can inhibit the CYP 450 liver enzymes that are required for the proper metabolism of some pharmaceuticals. This is very similar to how grapefruit juice can inhibit these enzymes. When inhibited, drugs may build up in the liver. If anticipated – and under a vet’s care – it can be a good thing as it means potentially using less of a drug to get more of an effect.

Although neither veterinarians nor customers have reported any indication of this type of issue with our products, we do recommend talking with your veterinarian before offering Treatibles or any new herb or supplement to your pet.

No, your pet will not get high from our products. The Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil in Treatibles contains virtually no THC, the psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis.

Neither freezing nor exposure to oxygen diminishes the efficacy of full spectrum hemp oil.

There is a slight flavor that many pets do not particularly enjoy. That’s why our chews and chewables come in a variety of flavors. The addition of MCT coconut oil to our dropper bottles also provides a pleasant taste cats and dogs love. For horses, we also include peppermint oil for a taste horses love.

Heating at temperatures less than 400 degrees does not change the benefits of full spectrum hemp CBD oil. During our infusion process, the oil is heated between 140 – 160 degrees, which actually enhances and protects the oil. Our hard chews are baked at temperatures less than 250 degrees. Our soft chews are air-dried, not baked.

As members of the National Animals Supplement Council (NASC), we adhere to regulations set forth by the FDA and the FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). When referencing CBD, it must be contained as part of a statement including ‘with naturally occurring CBD.’ That is why our labels read: Organic Full Spectrum Hemp Oil with naturally occurring CBD.

Together with our master cultivator partners, we have created a formula that features Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil with  supporting cannabinoids, terpenes and other beneficial compounds, producing a truly distinct oil. By growing our own hemp, we have access to various genetics. This diversity enabled us to develop and maintain our proprietary blend. Our formula cannot be duplicated by any other manufacturer.

We perform extensive tests on our raw oil and potency tests on the finished products. Results for the raw oil can be found on the Lab Results page.

It would be redundant to repeat the Microbiological Screening for each product, as the raw oil is used in all Treatibles products.

The potency of the CBD in each chew is verified on the COA. The proprietary blend is a mix of all of the active ingredients – in this case, it is 37 mg of turmeric and 4 mg of CBD.

Understanding Product Labels

Milligrams are a measure of weight and milliliters measure the volume of liquid. The actual liquid in the dropper bottles is measured in milliliters while the weight of the whole bottle is measured in milligrams.

Inactive ingredients are included as stabilizers. This can include preservatives, thickeners, flavors, colors and more.

Because Treatibles are classified as a dosage form animal product and not a food by the FDA, guaranteed analysis is not applicable.

Active ingredients are listed in descending order by weight/volume.

Inactive ingredients are listed in alphabetical order.

Treatibles Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD

Treatibles has various formulation partners with whom we develop different base Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD to incorporate into various products. This provides a variety of choices for our customers based on flavor, price, etc.

Yes. The full spectrum hemp CBD oil in all of our products is organic.

Our hemp CBD oils and extracts are full spectrum, meaning  sourced from the whole plant and including a rich cannabinoid, terpene and antioxidant profile.

Full spectrum hemp CBD oil indicates it includes a variety of naturally occurring compounds (cannabinoids, terpenes, antioxidants, essential fatty acids) from the whole plant, rather than isolating only one or two.

According to The Economist, the most neglected threat to public health in China is toxic soil, which contains elevated levels of heavy metals including lead and arsenic. In 2014 the Chinese government published a national soil survey which showed 250,000 square kilometers of farmland was contaminated by organic and inorganic chemical pollutants and by metals such as lead, cadmium and arsenic. Sewage irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides are also culprits throughout the country. Many people are unaware that hemp labeled as being from Europe is often grown in China and processed in Europe.

CBD Hard Chews

We recommend starting with one small hard chew for every 10 lbs of a pet’s weight and up to ten small hard chews for every 10 lbs of a pet’s weight. For the large hard chews, start with one for every 40 lbs of a pet’s weight up to ten hard chews for every 40 lbs of a pet’s weight.

For dogs of all sizes needing extra support, our 10 mg CBD Extra Strength Hard Chews are an excellent option. We recommend beginning with one per administration, which can be increased up to five, if needed.

Benefits generally last anywhere from 4 – 8 hours.

There are approximately 45 chews in both the regular strength large and extra strength l bags and approximately 75 chews in the small size chew bag. The servings per bag varies based on each pet’s weight. For example, a bag of large chews for an 80 lb dog receiving four chews per day would be 11 days. A bag of small chews for a 10 lb dog receiving two chews per day would be 37 days.

Treatibles offers two soft chewable options made specifically for cats – regular strength (1.5 mg CBD per chewable) and extra strength (3 mg CBD per chewable). Click here for more information.

All Treatibles hard chews are grain-free

Yes. All Treatibles hard chews are gluten free.

Treatibles hard chews are baked at temperatures below 250 degrees

Treatibles hard chews stay fresh for up to 2 years. We recommend keeping them tightly sealed and in a cool, dry place.

Our hard chews are made in the USA and manufactured in Safe Quality Foods (SQF) certified facilities. This ensures a consistent milligram count of full spectrum hemp oil per chew as well a product uniformity, which cannot be replicated in a small batch kitchen.

We do not include a guaranteed analysis of our products because they are designed for supplemental use and are not considered a food item. However, we understand that many of our customers have pets with specific dietary needs. Pet parents can rest assured that Treatibles uses healthy ingredients. Our small hard chews contain 5.4 calories per chew, large hard chews contain 13.5 calories per chew.

The formulas have not changed – the labels have changed due to FDA regulations, which do not allow CBD products in what they consider food. By renaming our chews, they are now compliant.

Because we are compliant members of the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC), we are no longer able to prominently feature the flavor on our hard chew bags, as this alludes them to being a food product when in actuality they are classified as dosage-form products. Therefore, we had to change the terminology we use to refer to the flavors we offer:

Calm- turkey flavor (tryptophan in turkey said to be relaxing)

Balance- Pumpkin flavor (soluble-insoluble fiber for digestive balance)

Ease- Blueberry flavor (antioxidants)

CBD Soft Chewables

For dogs, there are two varieties of regular strength (3 mg CBD per chewable) soft chewables  – original and Tater Tot’s Sweet Potato. We recommend offering one chewable per every 30 lbs of your dog’s weight, which can be increased to as many as 10 chewables per every 30 lbs of weight.

There is also an extra strength Soft Chewable option (7 mg CBD per chewable). We recommend offering one chewable per every 30 lbs of your dog’s weight, which can be increased to as many as 5 chewables per every 30 lbs of weight.

For cats, there are two soft chewables options – regualr (1.5 mg CBD per chewable) and extra strength (3 mg CBD per chewable). For both, we recommend beginning with 1 chewable per every 10 lbs of your cat’s weight. the regular strength can be increased to 10 per administration and the extra strength to 5 per administration.

Benefits generally last anywhere from 4 – 8 hours.

Treatibles soft chewables for cats are grain-free, as are the original and extra strength soft chewables for dogs. The Tater Tot’s Sweet Potato soft chewables contain rice bran and rice flour.

Yes, all Treatibles soft chewables are gluten free.

No. Our soft chewables are air-dried, not baked.

Treatibles soft chewables stay fresh for up to 2 years. We recommend keeping them tightly sealed and in a cool, dry place.

Our soft chewables are made in the USA and manufactured in Safe Quality Foods (SQF) certified facilities. This ensures a consistent milligram count of full spectrum hemp CBD per chewable as well a product uniformity, which cannot be replicated in a small batch kitchen.

Our soft chewabless for cats contain 3.1 calories each and soft chewables for dogs contain 7 calories each.

CBD Oil Dropper Bottles

The amount of administrations per dropper depends on the weight of the pet. For example, a dropperful  of our 90 mg oil  contains 3mg of CBD. For a 30 lb. dog, that would equal one serving. For a 15 lb. dog, that would equal two servings.

Our scored pipette helps to simplify measuring. There are marks for .25 ml, .50 ml, .75 ml, and 1 ml. The dosage is based on each pet’s weight. Because our oil dropper bottles are available in three potencies, the amount will be different with each. Please refer to our Dosage Card for an appropriate starting dose.

From what our customers have shared with us, mixing our oil into food may slow down the absorption, however the benefits remain intact. When given orally, the body does start absorbing the full spectrum hemp CBD oil through the mucosal membranes in the mouth, which does speed up the absorption rate.

Yes, they are appropriate. When offering a higher potency product, less oil is needed per dose.

Coconut oil features an abundance of antioxidants and is recognized for supporting the body’s normal immune system response. It is beneficial whether given internally or used topically.

Yes. Topically, our Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD  Oil can help reduce discomfort, manage burns, help in the healing of bites, cuts, scrapes and other skin irritations.

For multi-pet homes, we often recommend our 750 mg CBD oil dropper bottle because it is appropriate for cats and dogs and dosages can be adjusted for each pet’s body weight.

Both lines feature Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil, however the 1500 mg Auntie Dolores oil dropper bottle contains a flavorful cinnamon oil that is not appropriate for pets.

Yes for the 750 mg oil dropper bottle, however the 1500 mg human oil does contain cinnamon oil and is not appropriate for pets.

Yes, peppermint oil is safe for pets and is often used (diluted) to ease itchy skin on dogs. In large doses, it can be considered toxic, as almost all undiluted essential oils can be. Internally, it is safe when diluted, however too much can cause vomiting. Considering the strength of our 1500 mg oil, a dog would only ingest a few drops of total oil, with only a minuscule amount of that being peppermint.

Fun fact: Catnip is a part of the mint family. In addition to the euphoric effect it has on 70% off cats, the fresh and dried leaves (sometimes brewed into a tea) also work well to quell stomach upset in cats, dogs and humans.

Keep oil in a cool, dry place, like a pantry or drawer. We do not recommend refrigerating our oil.

CBD Capsules

Yes.

We have found that 60 or 70 lb. dogs experiencing severe discomfort often do quite well with our 10 mg capsules. Keep in mind that 1 mg of CBD per every 10 lbs of a dog’s weight is just a starting dose. It can be increased to as much as 10 mg of CBD per 10 lbs of body weight. That means a 70 lb dog may require as little as 7 mg of CBD per serving up to 70 mg.

We add a small amount of MCT coconut oil to our capsules to help increase the absorption of the full spectrum hemp CBD oil. The liver metabolizes MCT oil as it would a carbohydrate, thereby utilizing the hemp CBD oil right away instead of storing the oil in fat cells.

Generally, we recommend either one of our oil dropper bottles, hard chews or soft chewables for pets less than 60 lbs. For smaller pets, puncturing the capsule and adding the desired amount of the oil to food is an option.

Capsules are wonderful for large dogs, horses and many other animals. As a matter of fact, there is currently a sea lion taking Treatibles capsules daily.

CBD Topical Cream

It is perfectly safe for your pet to lick off the Topical Cream once it’s been applied to their skin. Because the formula is fast-absorbing, the benefits will still be there.

Pets seem to love the taste. If your pet gets into a container of Topical Cream and consumes a large amount, rest assured the ingredients are non-toxic. After consuming a high volume of the cream, tummy upset or lethargy may occur for some pets. In the off chance your pet has an unusual reaction (perhaps due to an allergy to one of the ingredients), out of an abundance of caution we recommend contacting your veterinarian.

Of course, we do advise keeping the container in a cool, dry place out of your pet’s reach.

Yes, it can help. As it absorbs, the Organic Full Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil works its way through the endocannabinoid system, offering calm, balance and ease. We have also found that it is a great alternative for pets that aren’t feeling well and aren’t in the mood for chews, chewables or oils being given orally.

Simply apply to the tip of the ears or paw pads. As the Topical Cream is absorbed, it can help instill calm and relaxation.

Generally, the Topical Cream offers relief for 4 – 8 hours. If your pet needs it applied more often, it is perfectly safe to do so.
